WVU Art Museum hosts inaugural Community Fest

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WBOY) — If you are looking for a free, relaxing, educational and indoor activity, the Art Museum of West Virginia University might be the place for you.

The museum, which has been open since 2015, hosted its inaugural Community Fest on Sunday where they had local vendors at the Museum Education Center and Peyton Terrace for dozens of visitors to experience.

There were hands-on activities for children to create and take home like painting pots and printing t-shirts, live music performed by WVU students and two local food trucks in attendance.

Jennifer Stueckle, a biology professor at WVU, said she wanted to come out and bring her family to support the museum, as she enjoys coming out to university community events.

“It’s great to just have different events to bring people out to see what’s in the buildings that they might pass every day,” Stueckle said.

“I mean, thousands of people drive past this building, but I’m not sure how many times actually stop and enjoy it. And it’s one of those types of things you can just spend an hour and have a nice little break in your afternoon and be exposed to something that maybe you wouldn’t of been otherwise.”

The museum is free, open to the public and features artists from all walks of life. One of their current exhibits is the “Off Kilter, on Point Art of the 1960s” from Colorado State University.

Bob Bridges, a curator at the museum, said WVU classes and other students in local schools have visited for field trips and classes, but Bridges said they would like for the wider community to know this is an option for them.

“I think it’s connecting with the community, but I also think that many people in the community don’t know about the Art Museum,” Bridges said. “So it’s my hope that as more people learn about the Art Museum they can realize this great resource we have right here in town.”

The museum is open Thursday through Sunday from 12:30 p.m. until 6 p.m. Its address is 20 Fine Arts Drive, Morgantown, WV. To stay updated with the museum, you can visit their website here.
