Venezuela demands arrest of former opposition mayor Ledezma for alleged treason

Venezuela’s Public Prosecutor’s Office has requested an arrest warrant for Antonio Ledezma, former major mayor of Caracas and opposition figure, on charges of treason and incitement to commit a crime.

This follows Ledezma’s television statement suggesting a potential civil rebellion in Venezuela, supported by a military uprising.

General Prosecutor Tarek William Saab stated on August 21 that they’ve pursued an arrest warrant for Ledezma (mayor from 2008-2015) for alleged treason, conspiracy, and incitement.

Ledezma had indicated that María Corina Machado, the coordinator of the opposition political group Vente Venezuela, might be spearheading a civil revolt, advocating civil disobedience as the sole viable solution.

Since 2017, Ledezma has been residing in Spain, having fled Venezuela while under house arrest.

He had been previously charged with conspiracy and association to commit a crime due to his alleged involvement in a coup plot named “La salida” in 2015.

Additionally, Saab mentioned the possibility of further arrest warrants related to these events.

The “La salida” plan, hatched in 2014, aimed at overthrowing President Nicolás Maduro and was followed by violent demonstrations resulting in 43 deaths and numerous injuries.
