Upcoming Comics October 17, 2023

Welcome back to Upcoming Comics! I’ll be honest with all of you, I haven’t thought about comics at all over the past week while on vacation. I’ve been having a lovely time eating pasta, drinking wine, and visiting museums. At no point did I have to devote any of my brain to whatever is going on in Gotham between Batman and Catwoman. I wrote most of this post before I left, planning to leave this intro for some clever commentary I’d think up later. Well later is now and I’ve still got nothing. If any of you feel I’ve wasted your time by rambling about something you don’t care about and are wondering why they even pay me to write this, all complaints can be filed to Sean, the site’s owner, via the contact page. With that out of the way, let’s look at some comics.

Harley Quinn: Black + White + Redder #4

Eisner nominee Zoe Thorogood has Harley recruit seven girls who compete to be her sidekick, but their attempts to be like Harley give her a bit of an identity crisis! Kyle Starks (Peacemaker Tries Hard!) and Chris Schweizer reacquaint Harley with an old college friend who needs her help to get back at their mutual bully! And Sean Lewis (King Spawn) and Hayden Sherman (DC Pride 2023) take Harley into the future, where an alien invasion might destroy the Earth, but more importantly, interrupt her favorite show!

  • Penciled By: Zoe Thorogood, Hayden Sherman, Chris Schweizer
  • Inks By: Zoe Thorogood, Hayden Sherman, Chris Schweizer
  • Colors By: Zoe Thorogood, Hayden Sherman, Chris Schweizer

Thoughts: Sounds like a lot of different takes on the kinds of Harley stories these writers want to tell. Hopefully some hit the mark.

Thoughts: It’s interesting to see a series premised on “what if Batman is the bad guy?” loop back around like this

Beyond the Bat

Welcome to Beyond the Bat, where we take a quick look at the rest of DC’s comics coming out this week.

Graphic Novel Watch

Sometimes you need more than floppies. Sometimes you want something that can sit nicely on your shelf that proudly displays your favorite stories. That’s when you turn to graphic novels. Let’s see what bat collections are coming out this week:

Ratings

Most Excited: Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #20– What more needs to be said than Waid is returning to one of the all time best DC stories with this already great series?

Least Excited: Catwoman #58– Everybody is fighting, nothing will be the same again, and none of it makes any sense.

Wild Card: Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong #1– Giant gorillas, radioactive dinosaurs, and superheroes all punching each other. This will either be the pinnacle of artistic achievement or a flaming dumpster fire.

Well that’s it for this week! Let us know in the comments what comics you’re looking forward to.
