OROVILLE — Two Chico juveniles find themselves in considerable trouble following a crime spree last week.
The Butte County District Attorney’s office filed charges Tuesday against a pair Chico teens for a violent carjacking and earlier unrelated robbery prosecutors accuse them of committing Friday, according to a press release.
Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey said the boys, ages 16 and 17, face accusations of carjacking a 68-year-old resident of Chico in the man’s driveway in the 1200 block of Whitewood Way in Chico at approximately 10 p.m. Friday.
The teens, dressed in dark clothing and masks, accosted the man as he got out of his car, according to a release from the DA’s Office. During the carjacking, one of the juveniles stabbed the man in his abdomen, causing the a non-life-threatening injury. The man, however, was able to hit one of the juveniles over the head with his cane before the duo took his car.
Officers from the Chico Police Department found the man, who was then transported to Enloe Medical Center and underwent surgery for his injuries.
Officers conducted a sweep of the area and noticed the stolen car moving nearby shortly after the stabbing, according to the release. The juveniles then ran from officers for about 15 miles in north Chico that ended after officers deployed spike strips to disable the car. The boys abandoned the car and ran, but they were apprehended by officers a short distance away.
During the investigation, officers say they determined that at 4 p.m. that day the same pair of juveniles had forcibly taken a phone and backpack from a 15-year-old high school foreign exchange student, as the student walked home from school in the 2900 block of Ceanothus Ave.
One of the juvenile suspects allegedly had personal property of this additional victim on his person at the time he was taken into custody for the carjacking, according to the release. Additional property belonging to the high school student was later found in the same juvenile suspect’s home.
The juveniles have been charged with carjacking with a knife, causing great bodily injury, in addition to robbery, evading officers and resisting arrest, according to the release. Both are currently being housed at the Butte County Juvenile Hall in Oroville.
Their initial detention hearing will be in Butte County Juvenile Court at 2 p.m. today.
