Surratt, Team USA Complete Sunday Rally to Capture Walker Cup

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland – Caleb Surratt wrapped up his time with Team USA at the Walker Cup on Sunday at the Old Course at St. Andrews, as the U.S. took the championship over Great Britain & Ireland (GB&I).

Team USA took 13 matchups straight up, while Surratt, who currently is the eighth ranked amateur in the world, won three of his four. The Indian Trail, North Carolina, native went 2-0 in singles, and won one of his foursomes with University of Virginia golfer Ben James. The American team overcame a 7.5-4.5 deficit at the conclusion of the first day to retain the cup with a 14.5-11.5 victory.

In his first appearance at the Old Course on Saturday, Surratt dropped the foursome with James 3 and 2. He came back strong in singles to take the 4 and 3 result over Barclay Brown. His birdies on holes five, nine and 12 charged the victory to add to the American total.

On Sunday, Surratt and James took a 2 and 1 result to help the USA comeback. The American duo tallied birdies on holes five, seven and 13 to help secure the win. A strong singles match closed out the weekend for Surratt, where he beat Calum Scott 3 and 2. During the match, the reigning SEC Freshman of the Year collected five birdies over the 16 holes to take the victory over the 31st-ranked amateur golfer in the world.

Surratt, who represented Team USA twice during the offseason, will now turn his attention back to Rocky Top for his sophomore campaign. The season begins this coming weekend, as Tennessee will host the Visit Knoxville Collegiate at Tennessee National Golf Club September 8-10.
