OROVILLE — An argument over a generator led to a shooting in which one person died, the Butte County Sheriff’s Office reported Tuesday.
Deputies learned of the shooting on the 6300 block of Custer Lane in Oroville when a person reported the shooting, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Office. They responded and found a person suffering a gunshot wound, but could not save the person. Deputies are withholding the decedent’s identity until next-of-kin has been notified.
Detectives say they determined four people drove to a home on Custer Lane and attempted to take a generator.
While they were trying to take the generator, a fight between Darren Moran, 54, of Oroville and the decedent broke out, according to the release.
Detectives believe at some point during the fight, Moran fired a gun and shot the other person.
After the shooting, two of the people who had been there left and went to a place near Wyandotte Avenue and Lower Wyandotte Road, according to the release. Detectives found the two people there and interviewed them. They were both arrested on suspicion of unrelated misdemeanor warrants.
Moran was arrested on suspicion of an open count of murder.
The Sheriff’s Office says the investigation is ongoing and anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Felony Investigations Unit at 530-538-7671.
