IPL Points Table 2024
With this year’s Indian Premier League set to kick off on March 22, the hunt for the crown begins but only one team can be king. And the fate of the champion is in the hands of the points table.
Ten teams are set to enter the skirmish for the trophy, with each team playing ever other team twice over the course of the season, adding up to a total of 18 matches per team.
Victory will earn a team two points, while a tie or an abandoned match will garner a point each as teams aim to gather as many points as possible to reach the playoffs. At the end of the league stage, the teams in the top four spots enter the playoffs, with one eventually being crowned champion.
In the event that two teams end on the same points total, their net run rate (NRR) is considered as the tie breaker.
The NRR is a ratio between the team’s run rate and their bowling run rate, with a positive NRR an indication that the team scores runs faster than it gives them away, with a negative NRR being the inverse of that.
If teams can’t be separated on the basis of their NRR, then their head-to-head record will be taken into consideration to progress to the playoff stage.
While the IPL table can’t be boiled down to just numbers however, with many a team unable to climb the table despite solid performances, while some underperforming teams able to snatch a spot if they get lucky.
At the end of the season, this table is set in stone, marking the champion and the teams below it in history.
