While the Indian market continues to go gaga over SUVs and high-riding crossovers, the shrinking space that is populated by mass-market sedans has picked up pace in recent years with the introduction of competitive products. The low-slung nature of sedans make them sportier when compared to corresponding SUVs, thanks to a lower centre of gravity and better aero. On that note, here’s a list of most powerful sedans in India under Rs 25 lakh.

5. Hyundai Verna – 1.5 NA petrol

The Verna’s 1.5-litre, four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine puts out 115hp and 144Nm, and can be had with either a 6-speed manual transmission or an optional CVT automatic. Pricing for the Verna starts from Rs 11 lakh. However, the Verna shares the fifth spot with two other sedans.

Skoda Slavia, Volkswagen Virtus – 1.0 turbo-petrol

The Skoda Slavia and Volkswagen Virtus’ smaller 1.0-litre, three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine puts out an identical 115hp, but a higher torque of 178Nm. Transmission options on both include a 6-speed MT and a 6-speed torque converter auto. While the Slavia 1.0 is priced between Rs 11.53 lakh-16.93 lakh, the Virtus 1.0 prices range from Rs 11.56 lakh-17.05 lakh.

4. Honda City – 1.5 NA petrol

The Honda City gets a sole 1.5-litre, four-cylinder NA petrol engine making 121hp and 145Nm torque, helping it secure the fourth position on this list. This engine can be had with either a 6-speed manual or an optional CVT automatic. Pricing for the City starts from Rs 11.82 lakh and goes up to 16.30 lakh for the top-end ZX CVT variant.

3. Honda City Hybrid – 1.5 petrol hybrid

The Honda City e:HEV (Hybrid) makes use of a 1.5-litre petrol engine that is connected to an electric generator motor. The hybrid powertrain belts out a combined 126hp and 253Nm torque, and is mated to an e-CVT transmission. The Honda City Hybrid is now available in a single fully-loaded ZX variant priced at Rs 20.55 lakh.

2. Volkswagen Virtus, Skoda Slavia – 1.5 turbo-petrol

The MQB-A0-IN cousins are both equipped with the same 1.5-litre, four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine on higher variants, putting out 150hp and 250Nm torque. This engine can be had with either a 6-speed manual gearbox or an optional 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. Pricing for the Slavia 1.5 TSI starts from Rs 15.23 lakh, while the Virtus GT range (1.5 TSI) has a base price of Rs 16.62 lakh.

1. Hyundai Verna – 1.5 turbo-petrol

The Hyundai Verna gets the top spot in this list, emerging as the most powerful petrol sedan in India under Rs 25 lakh, thanks to its 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, which is shared with the Creta, Seltos, Carens and Alcazar. This engine generates 160hp and 253Nm of peak torque, and is available with a 6-speed MT along with an optional 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. The Verna’s turbo variants are priced between Rs 14.87 lakh-17.42 lakh.
