SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Two San Francisco jails were placed on lockdown this weekend, the San Francisco Sheriff’s Office (SFSO) announced Sunday in a press release. The decision comes after “escalating attacks” and physical assaults on deputies and jail staff by the inmates.
Since March 29, seven staff members working at the jails have been injured, the sheriff’s office said. Some of those staffers suffered “serious injuries.”
There has been a “concerning” rise of fights at San Francisco jails in recent years, according to the San Francisco Deputy Sheriffs’ Association. The association added that the issue highlights the staffing shortages at these jail facilities.
“The lockdown went into effect for the protection of all who work or reside in, or visit our
jails, and includes cancellation of visits, programs, and services,” the SFSO press release said.
SFSO is currently investigating these instances of assault and its root causes. The law enforcement agency looks to identify the contributing factors in hopes of preventing any future incidents.
Normal operations at the jail are expected to resume next week.
