Rohit Sharma Backs Gill at No.3 Despite Centurion Struggle

After facing a massive defeat in the first Test match against South Africa, Team India is ready to face the next challenges. On January 3, India and South Africa will lock horns at Cape Town in the second Test match. In the first Test, young batter Shubman Gill failed to make an impact. He got out early. After that, he faced a lot of criticism. Before heading to the second Test match, Captain Rohit Sharma backed Gill as a number 3 batter.

Shubman’s Form:

After playing a lot of limited-over cricket, Team India headed to play a Test series against South Africa in their backyard. But in the first match, Team India faced a lot of challenges. The Indian batter struggled in the first innings. South African bowlers dominated them. When South Africa was batting, Indian bowlers faced difficulties in front of them. In the second inning, the scenario remained almost the same. Indian batters failed to dominate them. India faced a defeat of an innings and 32 runs.

After having a good World Cup season, Shubman Gill is seen struggling in the red ball format. In 2023, he struggled in the longest format of cricket. After Yashasvi Jaiswal made his Test debut for India in West Indies, he is opening the innings with Skipper Rohit Sharma. Shubman Gill is batting at no. 3. After he failed in the first Test, he received a lot of criticism for his current form.

Rohit Sharma on Gill:

After facing a massive defeat in the first Test against South Africa, Team India’s performance was criticized. Captain Rohit Sharma failed to make an impact. In the first innings, KL Rahul scored an amazing century. In the second inning, Virat Kohli played an amazing inning of 76 runs. Team India is all geared up and ready for the second Test.

Before heading to to second Test match, Rohit Sharma backed Shubman Gill a Number 3 batter. The Indian skipper said, “Shubman Gill prefers to bat at 3 & he feels he can do well for us batting at that position – I personally hated batting at 3.”

Later he added, “There is not much difference. It takes just 1 ball for a number 3 to go in. And sometimes when an opener gets injured, a number 3 has to walk out and open the innings. I don’t see much difference there. Gill is smart and understands his batting pretty well.”
