Ready Player One is to get a graphic novel written by the original novel’s writer, and part of its screenplay adaption, Ernest Cline and published in a 320 page book by Del Rey in July 2025. Originally a 2011 science fiction novel, and Ernest Cline’s novel debut, Ready Player One follows teenager Wade Watts, who lives with his aunt in Oklahoma City in the poverty-ridden “stacks” in a dystopian 2045. Watts is on his search for an Easter egg in the worldwide popular virtual reality game Oasis, the prize for which is to inherit the late game creator’s fortune. Realising that the first key is located on Ludus, the same virtual world as his own online high school, in a re-creation of the Dungeons & Dragons’ Tomb of Horrors, he joins with fellow searchers Art3mis and Aech, before role-playing as Matthew Broderick‘s character in the film WarGames, he starts to be able to make a living endorsing virtual products. This draws the attention of Nolan Sorrento, head of operations at Innovative Online Industries, who also want to inherit the Oasis… It’s a long and arduous journey, which was rather simplified for the movie, as Watts spends a consioderable period of teh story working alone, where in the film he always has his friends.
The movie adaptation, written with Cline Penn and Zak Penn and directed by Steven Spielberg, was released oin 2018. A sequel novel, Ready Player Two, was released in November, 2020, without the acclaim of the original. So maybe it’s time for Ernest to go back to the original in a new graphic form, How much of the graphic novel will be based on the original novel, and whether or not it takes visual cues from the film which more people are now familiar with, will – along with the artists for the graphic novel – be revealed at a later date.
