QUEENS, New York (WABC) — A man was struck and killed after attempting to stop two suspects from breaking into his car in Queens on Wednesday.
The deadly incident happened just after 3 p.m. at 85th Street and 25th Avenue near Gorman Park in East Elmhurst.
Police say 43-year-old Mauro Chimbay was at the intersection when he discovered one male suspect exit a white BMW and break into his vehicle, a white Toyota Highlander parked in the street, in attempt to steal the victim’s property.
A witness told Eyewitness News reporter Sonia Rincon that somebody heard the sound of glass shattering and yelled out to the owner that someone was trying to break into his car.
Police say the suspect then got back into the white BMW as the victim tried to stop the two suspects from fleeing.
The victim tried to grab onto the hood of the BMW as it fled and was thrown from the vehicle and struck, causing him to suffer severe trauma to his head.
Surveillance video shows that white BMW speeding away and neighbors running over to help the injured man.
The victim was taken to Elmhurst Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Police are looking for the suspects who fled in the BMW northbound on 85th Street.
There are no arrests and the investigation is ongoing.
