Public invited to see restoration efforts at California’s First Theatre – Monterey Herald

More than 20 years after California’s First Theatre closed back in 1999, the public is now invited to witness the historic building’s restoration.

Monterey State Historic Park Association, alongside the Point Lobos Foundation, is hosting An Evening at California’s First Theatre at 5 p.m. on aNov. 2, showing off their latest restoration efforts.

Located off Pacific Street in Monterey, the First Theatre adobe was built by Jack Swan around 1846 as a lodging house and tavern for sailors. It began its history as a theater in 1850 when U.S. Army officers began producing plays as a money-making venture. Swan built a small stage and provided benches, whale-oil lamps, candles for footlights and curtains made of red and blue blankets. Tickets sold for $5 each. First night receipts totaled $500.

The building is made of adobe and wood, and was designated a historic landmark in 1934. About a decade ago the structure began to suffer from damage caused by moisture that spawned mold that made the air inside unsafe for visitors.

The Historic Park Association alongside California State Parks raised more than $1.5 million in donations, grants and fundraising to complete the building’s essential restoration. In 2019 they received an infusion of $194,360 from the federal Save America’s Treasures program.

According to the association, there is still work to be done — but they are celebrating a milestone in keeping the First Theatre’s cultural and historical significance.

“This event is a unique opportunity to experience the cultural and historic significance of this venue and we hope you can be part of this remarkable occasion after a hiatus of over two decades,” the Historic Park Association announced in a press release.

The public can experience an evening touring the theatre and grounds while enjoying live music and refreshments. To save a spot RSVP to [email protected].
