NRLW news 2023 | Newcastle’s Shanice Parker sin binned for dangerous tackle as Knights hold on, Knights v Titans highlights

Knights centre Shanice Parker will have a nervous wait for the judiciary report after she was sin binned for a dangerous tackle on Sunday afternoon.

The incident, which occurred in the second half at 16-4 in the Knights favour, brought about a try to Titans half Sienna Lofipo, but the side couldn’t make the most of the advantage with Newcastle going on to win 22-10.

Queensland coach Billy Slater wasn’t surprised at the referee’s decision.

“You’ve got to be really careful when you grab a leg and lift, the pendulum can swing out of control, even though that’s not your intention,” he said on Nine’s coverage.

“They’re trying to get that out of the game.”

Eels captain Kennedy Cherrington copped a four-match ban for a similar act last week.

Post-game, Gold Coast coach Karyn Murphy lamented her side’s inability to capitalise on having an extra woman.

“There was an opportunity there and again another lesson there on how we take advantage of those situations,” she said.

“We definitely had opportunities and tried to go around them a bit there and made some errors which made it hard for us throughout the game but particularly during that time.”

Newcastle Knights coach Ron Griffiths said he didn’t have any feelings towards the sin bin.

“At the end of the day referees make decisions, that’s what they’re trained to do,” he said.

The Knights ran in two unanswered tries to start the game through Abigail Roache and Olivia Higgins.

Emily Bass hit back for the Titans immediately after before Roache grabbed her second right on half-time to make it 16-4.

Parker’s sin bin then occurred in the 41st minute, with the tackle performed on Lofipo, who ended up scoring.

Tamika Upton added polish to the performance with a runaway try late in the game to seal the win.
