NRL news 2023, Dragons offer Joey Manu $5 million in bitter blow to fullback Tyrell Sloan

St George Illawarra has delivered a bitter memo to young fullback Tyrell Sloan by signalling the intention to offer a rival $5 million.

The Sydney Morning Herald revealed the Dragons are prepared to pay Roosters superstar Joey Manu $1.2 million over four years if he wishes to leave Bondi.

Manu is a free agent as of Wednesday, although the Chooks are said to be confident in retaining his services.

Manu plays at centre most regularly, but can also play fullback or five-eighth, and Dragons coach Shane Flanagan told the Herald he would be keen to hand the player the No.1 jersey at the Red V if he came on board.

“From what I see when he plays fullback, his involvement is enormous. I think he could make a real fist of it,” Flanagan told the Herald.

“We have young Sloaney here, who I think we can develop and learn. He can play a bit of wing, Manu can play centre and wing.

“We just need to be in the market for some elite, quality players. If they go to market, they would want to test what they are worth and consider whether they would want to leave.

“If that happens with Joey, we’d be in there, but I don’t know if that will happen.”

Those comments from the incoming coach would be disheartening to 21-year-old Sloan – the Dragons junior who played all of his 23 NRL games this year at fullback.

While Manu is off contract and could earn $1.2 million a season in Wollongong, Flanagan isn’t confident in landing his signature.

“I’d love to have him, but I just don’t know if he’s going to move,” the Red V coach said.

“In the end, it’s not us, it’s not the Roosters, it’s just what Joey wants to do.”
