Minecraft has sold 300 million copies – Destructoid

When it comes to video game sales, there are very few titles that operate on the same stratosphere as Minecraft. The timeless sandbox game has shown its dominance yet again with an announcement from Mojang revealing that it has sold 300 million copies, helping it retain its position as one of the bestselling games of all time.

The announcement came during the Minecraft Live event held on October 15. Helen Chiang, who is the head of Mojang Studios, stated that the milestone was something “no one could have dreamed of when we were all placing our first blocks.” She also showed appreciation for the community, stating that it “has built Minecraft into what it is today and what it will become in the future.”

Mojang shared some interesting stats on Minecraft‘s official site. Between September 2023 and October 2023 alone, on average per day, there have been 15 million skeletons slayed, 8.8 million pickaxes crafted, and 6.7 million diamonds discovered.

Minecraft’s success story

It’s been a long road for Minecraft to reach the heights it has. The game was birthed in 2009 by Notch and it gained a large following of avid fans that allowed the game to grow so popular that it was purchased, along with Mojang, by Microsoft for an amazing $2.5 billion in 2014.

Since then, Minecraft has only grown thanks to a steady stream of new content, including the recent Trails and Tales update. There have also been numerous spin-offs released such as Minecraft Legends which launched in April this year.

Fans have plenty to look forward to. As the Minecraft Live event revealed, the armadillo is the winner of the 2023 Mob Vote. Minecraft is also turning 15 in 2024, and there is plenty in store to celebrate.
