Mercedes-Benz electrifies its iconic G-Wagon with the introduction of the Electric Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology. This groundbreaking model packs a punch with its quad-motor electric drivetrain, delivering an impressive 579 horsepower and 859 lb-ft of torque. Unlike its anticipated name “EQG,” it goes by the title of “Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology,” retaining the classic G-Class nomenclature while boasting innovative electric features beneath its familiar exterior.

Underneath its rugged exterior lies a sophisticated four-motor electric system integrated into a sturdy ladder-frame chassis. This setup provides the G580 with unparalleled off-road capabilities, including a unique G-Turn function, allowing for standing donuts to navigate challenging terrains with ease. The electric powertrain offers a range of features such as G-Steering and off-road cruise control, enhancing both performance and maneuverability in various conditions.

The G580’s electric powertrain not only delivers impressive performance but also offers practical advantages. Its 116-kWh battery, ingeniously integrated into the chassis, ensures optimal weight distribution and protection against external elements. Furthermore, fast-charging capabilities enable swift recharging, making it suitable for extended off-road adventures.

Off-road enthusiasts will appreciate the G580’s array of specialized features, including dedicated drive modes, low-range gear reduction, and off-road cockpit display providing essential information. The vehicle’s suspension system, redesigned for electrification, ensures exceptional articulation, while its low center of gravity and robust construction enable it to tackle extreme terrains with confidence. Surprisingly, to tackle terrain, the suspension system has a familiar setup featuring double wishbone front suspension and a solid rear axle. The motors are joined to the chassis and drive the wheels through dual-joint driveshafts.

Mercedes adds a unique touch to the electric driving experience with its G-Roar sound system, which simulates the familiar engine notes of traditional G-Class models. This optional feature adds a nostalgic element to the driving experience, complementing the vehicle’s modern electric propulsion.

While the G580 retains the unmistakable design language of the G-Class, it incorporates subtle enhancements to accommodate its electric powertrain. These include aerodynamic optimizations, functional air curtains, and optional exterior storage solutions, blending form with function seamlessly.

Inside, the G580 offers a luxurious and technologically advanced cabin, featuring premium materials and the latest MBUX software with EV-specific functionalities. The Edition One trim, available for the 2025 model year, adds exclusive design elements and enhancements, further elevating the driving experience.

With its blend of iconic design, advanced technology, and uncompromising off-road capability, the Electric Mercedes-Benz G 580 sets a new standard for electric SUVs, ushering in a new era of sustainable adventure.

No word on official pricing but we can speculate that it should cost a little more than the gas versions where we find the G550 commanding $144K and the G63 coming in around $180K. The electric G should fall in line just above the G550 but well below $200K.
