The Strand House in Manhattan Beach will host a Maui fire recovery fundraiser event on Thursday, Aug. 24, at 6 p.m., at its first floor StrandBar. Priced at $100 per ticket, the event will feature live performances from local musicians along with the restaurant’s full food, beverage and cocktail menus available for purchase, with 100% of ticket, food and drink sales to be donated directly to those who have been displaced, lost homes, businesses and belongings through Hawaii Community Foundation, and for the animals and pets displaced and injured, a partnership with the Maui Humane Society. The event is for ages 21+, tickets are available on Resy now.
On Sunday, Aug. 20, Abernethy’s at the Music Center will host a Puppy Yoga Event in celebration of Toni’s Menu, the restaurant’s new menu for dogs. There will be a free hour-long yoga class from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m., followed by puppy playtime. There will be free dog treats for dogs who come with their humans, plus a special human happy hour menu and giveaways. No reservations are required but bring your own yoga mat. The human happy hour menu includes chilled mussels, tempura fried squash blossoms, and Basque cheesecake, as well as an assortment of Ashland Hard Seltzers, beer and sangria. Dog-friendly items on Toni’s Menu inspired by executive chef Inspired by Brad Willits include an egg souffle and biscuits, which are available for dine-in or to-go.

And speaking of National Dog Day on Saturday, Aug. 26, SusieCakes will offer treats for both humans and their furry friends. Throughout the month of August and the dog days of summer, Susie’s Famous Dog Treats and Dog Frosted Sugar Cookies, made from a special recipe that combines peanut butter, flour, eggs and molasses, will be available with a $1 donation will go toward local shelters and charities, including the San Diego Humane Society, Love Bugs Rescue and the Muttville Senior Dog Rescue.
On that note, if you’re looking for the country’s #2 most dog-friendly restaurant in the United States, it’s Morrison Atwater Village according to Yelp. The list identifies businesses in the restaurants and food categories with a large concentration of reviews mentioning “dog-friendly,” then ranked those spots using a number of factors including the total volume and ratings of reviews mentioning those keywords between June 1, 2020 and June 1, 2023.
Located on La Brea and Beverly, the new Curated Wines Tasting Room will host a Women in Wine Tasting on Saturday, Aug. 19. Owners Staycee Furukawa and Matheus Stroher from Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits will present a lineup of women winemakers and women-owned vineyards. Tastings are $30 per person. RSVP HERE.

Sushi by Scratch Restaurants concept at Beverly Wilshire, A Four Seasons Hotel is underway through Oct. 4. There are three seatings per night, in an intimate dining room of 12 chef counter seats, in a speakeasy-style setting on the hotel’s eighth floor in the Royal Suite, with sweeping views of Beverly Hills. The pop-up (accessed via a private key-accessed-only elevator) features an intimate, dimly lit dining room, a welcome cocktail experience, and an immersive 17-course nigiri tasting menu with fish and shellfish flown in twice a week from Tokyo’s famous Toyosu Fish Market. Expect hamachi painted yellow with sweet corn pudding and topped with a fine sprinkle of breadcrumbs made from Kallas-Lee’s famous sourdough and albacore wrapped in sake-soaked nori and topped with ponzu, fresh wasabi and crispy onions, as well as Lee’s signature roasted bone marrow nigiri seasoned with soy sauce, sea salt and freshly grated wasabi root. Matcha Bon Bon with makrut lime, white chocolate, and shortbread paired with a hot green tea brewed with umeshu plum wine, smoked lavender honey, and fresh yuzu is for dessert.
Tickets for Taste of the Santa Ynez Valley, the four-day, six-town celebration of the region’s bounty held each fall, are on sale now. Held from Thursday, Sept. 28, through Sunday, Oct. 1, the celebration offers an experiential culinary exploration of the region’s food, wine, and more. More than 100 restaurants, wineries, tasting rooms, breweries and distilleries will collaborate for more than a dozen main and ancillary events set in and around the communities of Ballard, Buellton, Los Alamos, Los Olivos, Santa Ynez and Solvang.
