Kanawha Charleston Human Association 5k fundraiser held at Kanawha State Forest Park

CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) – The Appalachian Timing Group sponsored a 5k fundraiser event this weekend to help pay for repairs after the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association shelter sustained damage when a U-Haul truck drove into a back wall in March.

The 5k took place at the Kanawha State Forest Park. 220 people signed up to run for the cause and were joined virtually by 60 more participants. A few runners also brought along their dogs to run with them, and KCHA volunteers brought out a few dogs who are still in need of fostering while repairs are being made to the building.

The 5k fundraiser raised $5,000, and all proceeds went directly towards repairing the shelter.

Race director Ricky Campbell said it was amazing to see such a strong showing of community support.

“I think it’s pretty awesome. Especially because we’re throwing this together. The incident happened, what March 27th? So, we had three, four weeks’ notice, and we have this many people out here. I think that just shows how strong of a community we have to back them (the KCHA) up,” said Campbell.

The KCHA still has a long way to go before repairs to that back wall can be made. They recently announced that they were looking to construct a new building as well, you can read more about that by clicking here.

They are also in need of more foster homes for dogs who were displaced after the accident. If you’re interested in temporarily fostering a dog or cat while repairs are being made, you can check out the KCHA website by clicking here.
