I’ve Changed My Mind About Fall Cardigans

I can’t help but associate cardigans with my grandpa. Almost every day after high school, I would walk over to my grandparents’ house, and I distinctly remember that my grandpa was always dressed—usually, in a spiffy cardigan sweater, with dress slacks to match. He always looked incredibly stylish and put together. Problem is, I’ve always associated cardigans with octogenarian fashion since. Every time I’ve tried to put on one, I can’t help but think I should be sitting by the TV watching golf while cracking open some walnuts. I’ve always stayed away from the buttoned-up sweater as a result—thinking, foolishly, that they can’t possibly be cool.

This fall, however, there’s a handful of stylish celebrities who are changing my mind about the cozy cardigan. These new crop of sweaters are not at all like the thick, scratchy styles my grandpa would wear; they’re sleek, youthful, super-colorful, and made of thin knits.

The key to making the cardigan feel fresh, I’ve learned, is all in what you pair it with. Troye Sivan, for one, paired a teal Miu Miu cardigan with a similar-hued tee underneath; Tina Kunakey took the same approach in beige, giving it a stealthy, monochromatic feel. Gigi Hadid wore a bright yellow cardigan from her own brand Guest in Residence to the airport, and the look was super stylish. I loved that she paired it with a white tee and jeans, and a pair of neutral Adidas Sambas.
