Interview: Death’s Game stars Seo In-guk and Park So-dam on the emotional challenges of filming

Trigger warning: The article has mentions of self-harm.

In Death’s Game, a down-and-out man who tries to kill himself is faced by Death herself who condemns him to 12 cycles of life and death through different people who are about to die. Based on Lee Won-sik and Ggulchan’s cult classic webtoon of the same name, the Korean show sees Park So-dam and Seo In-Guk team up for a dark fantasy drama.
In a roundtable interview attended by Filmfare, the stars opened up about the biggest challenges of filming for Death’s Game. Seo In-Guk who has dabbled into fantasy in Doom at Your Service recalled the draining wire action sequences. He said, “For me, the wire action was tough because of my fear. And in the scenes between myself and Death, it was physically very draining both while acting and when I was prepping for the scene because of the emotional depth.”

He further added, “Since most scenes with Death were shot in ‘Death’s Hideout’, just the characteristics of that space really brings you down so I had to work to overcome that and effectively express the adequate emotions. That was the biggest challenge.”

Park So-dam who rose to global stardom with her role in the Oscar-winning Parasite revealed that portraying Death’s mean streak was quite the challenge. He explained, “For me, since my character has to be tough and harsh while Yee-jae is expressing all of those emotions, so as myself personally, it caused a lot of heartache. So that was quite challenging.”
