The Gujarat High Court has issued a contempt notice to four police personnel from the squad of DCP Zone-7, alleging the manhandling and public parading of an accused individual. This accused person was reportedly performing stunts on public roads with his Mercedes-Benz SUV.
The incident occurred last month on July 5th when 24-year-old Junaid Mirza was paraded by police officials on Sindhu Bhavan Road while holding a placard. The placard carried a message that read, “Gaadi mere baap ki hai, par road nahi,” translating to “The car belongs to my father, but not the road.”

Mirza approached the High Court, alleging that DCP Bhagirathsinh Jadeja, Sarkhej Police Inspector V. J. Chavda, PSI DP Solanki, Satellite PSI Dineshsinh Rathod, and Constable Irfan Sheikh publicly humiliated him by violating the directions issued by the Supreme Court.
Mirza, represented by his lawyer Siddharth Kheshkani, has requested the court to take action against these police officers. A division bench has sought replies from the police officers named in Mirza’s application, except for the DCP, as to why action under the Contempt of Court Act should not be taken against them.
Incident took place in 2021
The incident took place in 2021, and the video of the incident is from that year. The police team paraded Mirza on SB Road, where he and his friends were allegedly performing stunts in a Mercedes-Benz car. A video of these stunts went viral in February of this year, showing a group of young people engaging in reckless driving on public roads.
The FIR was filed based on the video recorded in 2021. When the charge sheet was filed, Mirza was a witness. However, according to Mirza’s lawyer, the police victimized him because he and his father refused to pay a bribe of Rs 10 lakh to the DCP’s office for a firearm license. When they declined to pay the bribe, a case was framed against Mirza.
The Gujarat State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has initiated proceedings in this case of apparent public shaming by city traffic police on Sindhu Bhavan Road (SBR). The SHRC has instructed the Director General of Police (DGP) to conduct an inquiry into the incident, assigning an officer of the rank of Inspector General of Police or Additional Police Commissioner to submit a report within 20 days. The SHRC has stated that it will take action in this case under Section 18 of the Human Rights Act of 1993 following verification under Section 12 of the Act, as conveyed by Mirza’s advocate, Kheskani.
