Glenn Maxwell Faces Uncertainty Ahead of India ODI Series and World Cup

Star Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell is grappling with ankle soreness and the possibility of missing the upcoming ODI series against India. This situation could potentially leave him with very little match practice as he gears up for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup later this year.

Maxwell cautious about his fitness

Maxwell’s injury woes stem from a leg injury sustained at a friend’s birthday party last year. Currently, in Australia, he is also awaiting the birth of his first child. While the 34-year-old is still hopeful of making a brief appearance during Australia’s ODI series against India scheduled for later this month, his primary focus remains on ensuring he is fit for the World Cup.

“I still want to play some part in that India series. But I’m not feeling any pressure on it. The selectors and the staff have been brilliant with me as well. They don’t want to put too much pressure on me to set a specific date because they know they’ve got extra time before the World Cup. So, instead of rushing it and potentially falling behind by a week or two, I can give myself more time to ensure I can participate in the entire tournament,” Maxwell stated.

Having been part of Australia’s World Cup campaigns in 2015 and 2019, Maxwell is a vital asset to the team due to his ability to contribute with both the bat and ball and make an impact in the field.

Not rushing getting back into action

Maxwell has not represented his country since featuring in an ODI against India at Wankhede in March. Furthermore, he has not played any cricket since a one-off appearance in an English County Championship match for Warwickshire in early July.

Originally slated to play in the T20I segment of Australia’s ongoing tour of South Africa, Maxwell’s ankle soreness forced his return home. Reflecting on his injury, he said, “I couldn’t have foreseen how sore I was going to be once I got to South Africa. Even when I went to train that day, I felt fine. There was nothing wrong. Something just got impinged. I think one of the tendons around my ankle was a little bit inflamed, causing some swelling and pain.”

Maxwell is hopeful that cortisone treatment will alleviate the issue and allow him to return to full fitness soon. He acknowledges the need for more cautious preparation in the future to avoid setbacks and ensure he overcomes his original injury hurdle.

Maxwell’s situation highlights the challenges faced by athletes in managing injuries and the importance of a well-structured rehabilitation and recovery plan. While Maxwell remains optimistic about his participation in the World Cup, his immediate focus will be on regaining full fitness and contributing effectively to Australia when called upon.
