Fremantle Dockers angry with Liam Henry after trade request to Victoria, significant investment, high asking price

Fremantle has expressed its disappointment after former No.9 draft pick Liam Henry formally requested a trade to Victoria, noting their dismay after “significant investment” in the 22-year-old’s career.

Henry, who has played 43 games for the Dockers, is now out of contract, with the club angered by his decision after their efforts to support his growth.

Fremantle footy boss Peter Bell has spoken about the club’s endeavour to support Henry’s “development” since he was a teenager, with Fremantle left feeling unfulfilled at the pending loss of a star prospect.

“It is disappointing that Liam Henry has opted to explore his options, especially considering we have been involved in his development since he was 15 and he has taken some significant steps forward this year,” Bell said via a statement on Wednesday.

“We made a significant investment in Liam, not just through our Next Generation Academy, matching Carlton’s bid under NGA concession rules in the 2019 draft, and it was pleasing to see his potential come to fruition this year.”

Bell remained strong that the Dockers will have a high asking price for the youngster, with his last 12 games across 2023 seeing him average a solid 22 disposals, cementing a spot in the senior side.

“We will have this investment and his talent as a winger front of mind when looking to facilitate a trade,” Bell said.

Fremantle will enter into discussions with North Melbourne, St Kilda and Hawthorn vying for the 22-year-old’s services.

The AFL trade period begins Monday October 9 after the finals series has drawn to a close, with the trade deadline landing on Wednesday October 18.
