‘Fallout London’ “screwed” by surprise next-gen update

Fallout London, an upcoming Fallout 4 overhaul mod set in London, has been “screwed” by Bethesda dropping a next-gen update for the game without warning.

Speaking to the BBC, with transcriptions from PC Gamer, project lead Dean Carter says the update “has, for a lack of a better term, screwed us over.” The mod was due to launch on April 23, St Geroge’s day, and the “in-game start date”, but those plans have since been scrapped, with the launch pushed back indefinitely while the team takes time “tweaking and testing to get things as stable as we can for you all in time for that release.”

Updates to games can frequently interfere with mods that then have to be updated too. In fact, Skyrim fans have already begged Bethesda not to update the game anymore as it is breaking their mods. If a modder stops updating their projects, they can become outdated and either run badly or not at all. As Fallout London is still in development, its team can take the time to ensure everything works as planned.

Carter explains that there has been a “lack of communication” from Bethesda. While he acknowledges “there is always going to be a hesitancy about working with the community because we’re not industry professionals,” he adds that Fallout London has “out-performed some of the Fallout 76 announcements … You’d think that they’d have at least had a conversation”.

Fallout London is an overhaul mod that would transport the usually American setting of the games to London. It was once going to include ghoul versions of Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles III, but they were removed following the Queen’s death in 2022.

In other news, Garry’s Mod is removing years’ worth of Nintendo-related material following takedown orders.
