Exclusive: Google Pixel Fold 2 360-Degree Video And 5K Renders Reveal; No More Horizontal Camera Visor

It’s not every day that we see radical new smartphone designs that could change the course of developments. For years, the Google Pixel phones have followed a similar design language, helping the models establish their identity. Leading the front is the horizontal camera visor, which has been around since the Pixel 6 came out in 2021. Even when the company stepped into a new category, i.e., foldable phones, it maintained the iconic look of the Pixel Fold. However, that is about to change with the Pixel Fold 2.

Pixel Fold 2 360-Degree Video

In collaboration with @OnLeaks, we present the first 360-degree video and 5K CAD-based renders of the Pixel Fold 2, Google‘s next-generation foldable expected to come out this year. The 360-degree video reveals the elegant smartphone that the Pixel Fold 2 is, in its dark gray, or what the company likes to call the Charcoal finish. The first 10 seconds showcase the smartphone in an unfolded state, with the inner screen that measures 7.9 inches diagonally. Factoring in the corners, the measurement goes up to 8.1 inches.

Two to three seconds into the video, one can see the placement of several functional elements. For instance, the USB-C port, speaker grill, microphone, and SIM tray are on the lower frame, whereas the power/volume buttons are on the right side. On the top, the phone has an antenna band and a secondary speaker grill, while the left frame appears shiny and clean. When unfolded, the phone measures about 155.2 x 150.2 x 5.27 mm.

The video also reveals the presence of a camera sensor at the top right of the inner screen. We’ve learned it’s an under-display camera setup accompanied by a new sensor that wasn’t a part of the previous Pixel Fold.

The second half of the video reveals the phone’s cover screen and the rear camera setup. Talking about the cover screen measures about 6.4 inches. With the corners, the number goes up to 6.6 inches. We can also see the centrally-located punch-hole camera at the top. When folded, the phone measures about 155.2 x 77.1 x 10.54 mm.

The display sizes clearly show that the Pixel Fold 2 will ship with larger displays than the original model. This, in turn, also increases the overall dimensions of the phone. Further, the phone is significantly slimmer.

Addressing the elephant in this room, the Pixel Fold 2 will have a triple rear camera setup with several sensors. Instead of a horizontal visor, Google has gone for a bulky, rectangular camera island that protrudes from the rear panel. The island houses two pill-shaped cutouts.

In the first cutout from the top is a camera sensor and a pair of sensors that could assist with focussing. The lower cutout contains two more camera sensors and a tiny cutout that might belong to another sensor. The flash module and a microphone are toward the right of these camera sensors.

Pixel Fold 2 Expected Specifications

From what we’ve learned, it’s clear that the Pixel Fold 2 will carry a larger form factor when compared to the original Pixel Fold. Under the hood, the smartphone is said to run on the Tensor G4 SoC, a. chipset that hasn’t been featured on a Pixel device yet.

Regarding RAM and storage, the smartphone should ship with up to 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB of UFS 4.0 storage. Out of the box, the device should run on Android 14 and, ideally, get seven years of software updates like the Pixel 8 series. We’re expecting the company to reveal the foldable at the I/O 2024 event, scheduled for June 27, 2024.
