Deputy shot, wounded man after he shot at them, K-9 – Chico Enterprise-Record

CHICO — Deputies shot a man in the leg before arresting him around 1:20 a.m. Thursday near the Skyway and Lava Rock Road.

Two Butte County Sheriff’s Office deputies were investigating 39-year-old Chico resident Travis McCarty for allegedly carrying firearms as an ex-felon and possibly stalking the mother of his child, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Office. Deputies were concerned for the safety of the mother and the child and two deputies went to the area where they were staying near Lava Rock Road.

Around 1:20 a.m. a car that deputies allege McCarty was driving arrived in the area and the Sheriff’s Office says McCarty immediately began shooting at the two deputies, hitting their patrol car at least three times and nearly missing them and a BCSO K-9 that was also in the car. The deputies got out of the vehicle and one of them shot McCarty in the leg. They then immediately rendered aid to McCarty.

McCarty was treated at a local hospital, released and then booked at the Butte County Jail.

He was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder on a peace officer, being an ex-felon in possession of firearms and ammunition, shooting at an occupied vehicle and assault with a firearm on a peace officer.

The Butte County Officer Involved Shooting Incident Protocol Team is currently conducting an investigation. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact the Butte County District Attorney’s Office at 530-538-7411.
