Cult vampire shooter ‘El Paso, Elsewhere’ to get big screen adaptation

Hit indie game El Paso, Elsewhere is reportedly set to be turned into a movie starring Atlanta’s LaKeith Stanfield.

The supernatural neo-noir third-person shooter was developed by Strange Scaffold and released in September 2023. It went on to receive “very positive” reviews on Steam and now is set to be turned into a full-length feature film.

The news was originally shared by Deadline, who reported that Stanfield is currently in talks to star in the film and serve as producer.

The report went on to say that the film will follow the plot of the game closely, with James Savage having to confront his own inner demons while also recovering from a toxic relationship. He also has to deal with his ex-girlfriend before she pulls off a world-ending ritual. “James navigates her reality-bending universe of ethereal monsters while facing the truth of his own addictions and skewed sense of self-worth, learning that the only route to love is through healing.”

Strange Scaffold studio head Xalavier Nelson Jr later shared his excitement with social media following the news. “El Paso, Elsewhere movie is happening. Ahhhhhhhhhh!”

Speaking to NME about the game, Nelson Jr said “El Paso, Elsewhere is my ultimate expression of vulnerability” and serves as a spiritual successor to “dream game” Max Payne. 

“El Paso, Elsewhere is not an interesting game because it stars a Black protagonist or because it’s made by a Black person. It is interesting and compelling because you look at it and you instantly know it’s the next game you need to play, period. And it’s Black as hell,” he continued.

It comes after hugely successful adaptations of The Last Of Us and Fallout. Following the launch of Amazon Prime Video’s Fallout earlier this month, interest in the Fallout games has exploded while music featured in the series has also experienced a boom.
