CSU Monterey Bay celebrated ‘RAFT’ weekend with multiple activities – Monterey Herald

California State University at Monterey Bay celebrated its homecoming “RAFT” weekend with several community events this past weekend.

The annual “Reunion and Family Traditions” event refers to the way sea otters link arms to stay together on the ocean, highlighting the university’s emphasis on connection and community.

Friday and Saturday’s RAFT featured university events as well as community events.

Current student events included a guided mountain bike ride through Fort Ord National Monument, a “Werk Witch” drag show and a coastal bike ride from the university’s campus to Monterey, while alumni events featured a trip to the Break Room on Lighthouse Avenue and wine tasting at Odonata Wines.

Community events open to the public included the RAFT Weekend Carnival, which featured live music, performances, food vendors, alumni-owned businesses, carnival games and field competitions; brunch with the university’s president, Vanya Quiñones; a car show and the Monterey Bay Football Club game against Orange County.

This year’s RAFT weekend also featured the inaugural “Monte’s 5K.” The first non-competitive CSU Monterey Bay race took place Saturday and included nearly 400 runners.

“We’ve spent three days enjoying new and old Otter traditions,” Quiñones said in a university story about the event. “I saw so many Otter alumni and our current students with their families on campus and it’s a reminder that our Raft is strong. I want to especially thank all those who helped to plan an excellent 2023 Raft weekend.”
