Cricket World Cup 2023: Why KL Rahul was not too happy with his match-winning six against Australia

KL Rahul and Virat Kohli helped guide India to a six-wicket win over Australia on Sunday at Chennai’s Chepauk stadium. Despite hitting the winning run with a six and bagging the man of the match award for his unbeaten 97 off 115 balls, Rahul has a small regret. He could not bring up his hundred. KL Rahul was on batting on 91 when India needed five to win. The wicketkeeper-batsman hit Australian captain Pat Cummins for a six through the off-side to seal victory. “(Last shot for six) I hit it too well. I wanted to get a hundred by going four and six. Hopefully, some other time I can get it,” said KL Rahul in the post-match presentation.

Chasing 200 for victory, India were reeling at 3 for two after three of their top four batters fell for ducks. Then Virat Kohli and KL Rahul pulled off the rescue act by forging a match-winning 165-run partnership.

In the post match presentation, KL Rahul also revealed that Virat Kohli advised him to start slowly and play in a Test cricket-like manner as it was a difficult pitch to bat on. The 31-year-old had just taken a shower on a hot and humid day and was hoping for some rest but had to rush out after India’s top-order collapse.

“There were not a lot of conversations with Kohli. I had just taken a shower and was hoping to put my feet up for half an hour after the fielding innings, but I had to come in. Virat said that I should play like Test cricket for a bit. Happy to play this for the team. There was a bit of help for the fast bowlers early on. It was still two-paced. It was not a great wicket to bat on, neither was it too difficult,” he said.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah congratulated the Men In Blue for their performance against Australia. “Congratulations to Team India on an electrifying start to the World Cup! Our frontline spinners were outstanding, restricting Australia to just 199. Special mention to @imVkohli and @klrahul for displaying their class with remarkable knocks. Let’s keep the momentum going!” he said in on post on social media platform X.

India face Afghanistan in their next match on Wednesday. Since his return to the Indian team after an injury, KL Rahul has continued his golden run in the middle-order. He hit a match-winning ton against a high-profile Asia Cup match against Pakistan, two fifties against Australia in the ODI series and now finally this match-winning unbeaten 97 against Australia in the World Cup opener.
