Could this be the name of Ford’s next-gen electric ute?

Ford has trademarked a name in the US which it could potentially be using on its forthcoming next-generation electric pickup, previously been referred to as ‘Project T3’.

An August 28 filing lodged with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), unearthed by 7thMustang forum user Cobra, shows Ford has trademarked the name F-200.

This name has been trademarked for “motor vehicles, namely gasoline and electric automobiles, pick-up trucks, sport utility vehicles and their structural parts”, according to the filing.

Ford is yet to comment on the trademark filing, or whether it actually plans to call its next electric ute the F-200.

As previously reported, the Project T3 electric pickup has been referred to as the “epic sequel to the F-150 Lightning”.

This new Ford electric pickup and its battery pack will be produced at the Blue Oval’s yet-to-be-finished Blue Oval City mega-campus in West Tennessee from 2025.

There will also be a new Ford electric full-sized three-row SUV due in the US in 2025 as well, with a claimed range of 563km.

“Project T3 is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to revolutionise America’s truck,” said Ford CEO Jim Farley earlier this year.

“We are melding 100 years of Ford truck know-how with world-class electric vehicle, software and aerodynamics talent. It will be a platform for endless innovation and capability.”

Mr Farley added the electric pickup is “going to be like the Millennium Falcon – with a back porch attached”.

The carmaker has said the Project T3 and Blue Oval City are being developed at the same time. Once running at full production the facility is claimed to be capable of producing 500,000 electric pickups annually.

This is over three times what Ford is currently projecting for its annual production rate of the F-150 Lightning by the end of 2023.

Ford has already confirmed it’s rolling out two new EV architectures, one for use by full-sized pickups.

That indicates Ford is developing a rival to the Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV, which ride on a dedicated EV architecture rather than sharing a platform with the combustion-powered Silverado and Sierra.
