‘Colourful’ Cody Mo hoping feng shui-inspired outfits bring first-season luck | HK Racing

You cannot miss Cody Mo Wai-kit and his team in the mornings at Sha Tin, and the rookie trainer has revealed advice from a feng shui master inspired his stable’s colourful (and hopefully lucky) new garb.

Brimming with excitement ahead of his first runner at Sha Tin on Sunday, Mo explained the thinking behind a strip that has ensured his team has been noticed even before taking a horse to the races.

“Everyone’s noticing how colourful the shirts are. I was advised by a feng shui master that these three colours are good for me,” Mo said.

“I like the purple, the red is lucky for me and yellow is not bad, so we’ve gone with a combination.”

A long-time assistant to living legend Tony Cruz, Mo also had stints with David Hall, David Ferraris and Benno Yung Tin-pang before being granted his own licence ahead of this season.

After bypassing the first two meetings of the campaign, Mo debuts with Beauty Nova this weekend.

“It’s great to have my first runner, but for me, I’ve tried to keep everything normal. I’m looking forward to the season and also getting a winner. Hopefully, I get some luck,” said the 45-year-old handler.

“To be a trainer in Hong Kong is very exciting and every winner is very hard to get.”

Any luck brought by Mo’s eye-catching outfits has not extended to Beauty Nova’s barrier draw, with the five-year-old lumped with gate 13 for the Class Five So Kon Po Handicap (1,400m).

Formerly trained by John Size, Beauty Nova remains a maiden through 28 starts in Hong Kong, but he placed in the cellar grade on half a dozen occasions last term, as well as starting at single-figure odds eight times.

“He was quite consistent last season, but sometimes after races he had some blood [in his trachea]. I’ve done a couple of gallops and he scoped clean, so hopefully, he puts in a strong performance,” Mo said of a horse who finished third from the outside stall over the course and distance in May.

Fownes ready for another title push: ‘Straight Arron excites me the most’

“You can see the form for this horse before he had one race on the B track from barrier 14 with Zac Purton. He put him around midfield and he had some dash, so I hope the horse can have the same or better performance in this race.”

Derek Leung Ka-chun takes the ride on Beauty Nova after getting his campaign rolling with a double at Happy Valley on Wednesday.
