Cleveland Cliffs tin-plate facility officially idles, hundreds laid off

WEIRTON, W.Va. (WTRF) — The Cleveland Cliffs Weirton tin-plate facility officially idles today, leaving many workers out of a job.

Some workers will remain at the mill to clean it as a part of the idling process between now and the end of the year.

Mark Glyptis, president of United Steel Workers Local 2911, says he’s received calls across the county to recruit the workers who have been laid off. He says it’s due to the workers’ strong work ethic and skill set that so many people have been reaching out.

“I’m getting calls from Florida, Arizona, California, Texas, Utah, they’re calling me and asking me – they’re recruiting our employees. They are paying their expenses to come down and be interviewed at the plants, see what they’re offering them. But I want them back here okay, when we get it back to where we should be, people have the option to come back.”

Glyptis says he understands how difficult this time is as many workers have raised a family and have built their lives around working at the mill.

He says he will continue working on a long-term plan with the community and political representatives to ensure the mill returns stronger than ever.
