CHICO — Continuing a community tradition, the Chico State University Farm will open its orchards to the public Wednesday and Thursday mornings for its annual U-Pick Peaches event.
Pickers may come between 8 a.m. and noon both days and take as many peaches as they want for $20. The farm will provide containers to help protect the fragile fruit in transit.
Funds raised support the College of Agriculture’s orchard program.
“We are excited to continue the tradition of the U-Pick peach event this year,” University Farm Director Ricardo Orellana said in a news release. “This event not only provides an opportunity for the public to get affordably priced fresh local fruit. It also brings all ages together to get a chance to see what the University Farm has to offer.”
Last year, pickers harvested around 21,000 pounds of peaches. This year’s offering is the Fay Elberta peach, which the university describes as a large, yellow-skinned freestone with a slight red blush — popular for canning.

The University Farm also sells greenhouse plants and organic vegetables Thursdays and Fridays, 1-4 p.m., at its greenhouse. The Meats Laboratory, typically open Thursdays and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m, will hold public sales next Wednesday as well.
“The University Farm is a pivotal piece of our students’ experience in the College of Agriculture and all of Chico State,” Orellana said. “The hands-on learning opportunities our students receive in the orchards and the farm continue to provide our students with engagement in classes, internships and undergraduate research.”
