Chemical spill shuts down road in South Charleston

UPDATE (2:40 p.m. on March 11, 2024) — According to the South Charleston fire chief, the spill has been contained. They also said that it was a small spill consisting mostly of Ethanol Glycerin Water, which they said is not a hazard to the public.

Responders are now assessing the damage to the truck’s container.

Kanawha Turnpike is still shut down at Jefferson Road eastbound and the Kanawha Turnpike exit off I-64.


SOUTH CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) — A chemical spill shut down a road in South Charleston Monday afternoon.

According to Metro 911, the spill occurred at at Kanawha Turnpike at Union Carbide Drive on Tech Center Hill. As a result, Kanawha Turnpike is closed at the spill location along with the westbound Kanawha Turnpike exit off I-64.

The Kanawha County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management said that the chemical is coming from a leaking box truck and that it is an isolated incident with no need for evacuation.

Responders from the South Charleston Fire Department are on scene at this time. It has not been reported what the chemical is or how long the cleanup will take.
