Bike path rehab, ‘gateway arch’ slated for south Chico – Chico Enterprise-Record

CHICO — Chico was awarded with a near $3 million grant Monday for proposed improvements to south Chico in the statewide program Clean California.

The city planned improvements to the Chico-Durham bike path and a replacement for “The Plow” art piece with a new gateway arch public art piece over Meyers Street, according to Kevin Murphy, public information officer for Caltrans District 3.

Chris Ruggle, who was seen cycling Thursday, said he travels the path about four days a week, and thinks it’s in need of repaving.

“There’s some places that need to be repaired,” he said.

Ruggle said he’d like to see stop signs along the bike path to be turned so that cyclists have the same right of way as vehicles.

Other improvements include irrigation, landscaping, bike path and some sidewalk replacements.

Murphy said the gateway art piece was included as a public art element to the project. It also proposed planting trees along Park Avenue and litter abatement in the area.

Murphy said the grant awarded to Chico is one of many projects included in the Clean California program.

Later this year, construction is set to begin on improvements to Highway 99 intersecting East 20th Street and the Skyway that will include improvements similar to the Highway 70 beatification project in Oroville with public art elements and beautification efforts.

In Willows, a project improving Sycamore Park adding sidewalks to the north and east sides of the park; improving lighting and installation of solar panels was also awarded Wednesday by the state grant.
