10 Philip Barbour student-athletes sign to continue their academic and athletic careers

PHILIPPI, W.Va. (WBOY) — Ten student-athletes from Philip Barbour High School took one more step toward playing at the collegiate level on Wednesday as they signed their national letters of intent in front of friends, family and teammates.

Half of the student-athletes comes from the Philip Barbour Girl’s Soccer team, with five players declaring that they would continue playing soccer collegiately. Arrington and Braylyn Sparks announced their plans to play at Fairmont State University, Kaylee Simons has plans to play at WVU Tech, Avery Swiger at Glenville State and Jorjalynn Ward at Garrett College.

Girl’s soccer wasn’t the only team to have multiple signees as the track and field team had two field athletes and a runner put pen to paper to continue competing in college. Keaton McDermott and Joey Kittle have plans to head to West Virginia Wesleyan College to continue throwing shot put and discus while Phaedra Payne looks to continue running cross country at WVU Potomac State College.

Athletes from other sports were represented as well with Katie Kennedy announcing her plans to come to Salem University to play volleyball and Albert Gonzales planning to continue playing baseball at Nichols College.
