Wade Graham whacks NSW government over Sharks finals stadium drama

Cronulla Sharks captain Wade Graham has taken aim at the NSW government amid furore over the NRL’s decision to allow finals matches at suburban grounds.

Graham and the Sharks will host the Sydney Roosters at PointsBet Stadium in this weekend’s elimination final, meaning thousands of fans will be locked out due to the ground’s limited capacity.

The decision to allow the Sharks to play at PointsBet comes with the 45,000-capacity Allianz Stadium empty this weekend.

While he understands fans’ frustrations, Graham pointed the finger squarely at the government for the predicament.

”I understand the argument, and it’s unfortunate (that people miss out), but we’re in a position where everyone has earned a home semi so we deserve it as well,” he said.

“I think the government should throw some funding at the Sharks to update that facility because the infrastructure there now with the new development needs a new stadium to sit side-by-side with it.

“That’s a government issue, not ours.

“They’ve looked after everyone else so I think they need to throw a little down the Sharks’ way.”

Grahams comments follow those from former club captain Paul Gallen, who hit out at criticism over the NRL allowing the Sharks to play at their home ground this weekend.

“PointsBet Stadium can hold about 13,000 people and while the NRL would ideally like more capacity for big games like finals, the fact is the Sharks can play wherever they like,” Gallen wrote in his Wide World of Sports column.

“The club and the team have earned the right to host a final and Shark Park is the best option for them, end of story.

“Why should other clubs get the advantage of choosing their finals venue, but the Sharks be forced to take their game somewhere else?

“People are suggesting Allianz Stadium should host Saturday’s game against the Roosters. Get stuffed, no way.

“As if Cronulla would willingly take a home final to a venue that is in the middle of the opposition territory. That would be ridiculous.”
