Tipped to be India’s most affordable electric car

On the occasion of World Electric Vehicle (EV) Day 2022, Tata Motors pulled off a surprise by announcing the all-new Tiago EV. With the new Tiago EV, Tata Motors is planning to strengthen its presence in the electric mobility space, which it is already dominating with a monumental share of 88 per cent. The new Tata Tiago EV will also become the most affordable electric car from Tata Motors, which currently has the Tigor EV and Nexon EV in its arsenal.

Like the Nexon EV and Tigor EV, the new Tata Tiago EV will also be based on its IC engine version in terms of design. The Tiago EV is expected to retain the exterior look of the petrol-powered Tiago with some EV-specific elements, like a closed grille at the front and blue highlights all around, something which it has already done with the Tigor EV. The blue highlights are expected to be on the front fascia boot lid garnish and the wheel caps or alloy wheels.

The new Tata Tiago EV is also expected to retain the cabin layout of the Tigor petrol with a dual-tone black and grey theme for the interior. Here also, the car might get blue highlights around the instrument console and the centre console, both of which will be shared with the Tigor EV. It will also likely get the same transmission knob as the Tigor EV in the lower centre console.

Tata Motors announces Tiago EV: Tipped to be India’s most affordable electric car

While Tata Motors has not revealed any details related to its powertrain, the Tiago EV is likely to get the same combination of front-mounted electric motor and battery as the Tigor EV. Currently, the Tigor EV is powered by a front-mounted electric motor, which is capable of producing 75 PS of power and 170 Nm of torque, and the Tiago EV is expected to claim the same performance numbers. Apart from the motor, the Tiago EV might also share the 26 kWh lithium-ion battery pack from the Tigor EV.

This battery pack claims a maximum driving range of 306 km in the Tigor EV, and it is interesting to see how much range will this battery offer in the Tiago EV.

With the Tiago EV set to become its most affordable electric vehicle for India, Tata is eyeing to achieve 30 per cent electric vehicle penetration by 2030. The Indian carmaker recently expanded its EV lineup with the Nexon EV Max with a more powerful motor and a bigger battery pack. It also introduced a new range-topping Prime variant for the regular Nexon EV, with some additional features from Nexon EV Max.

With the Tata Tiago EV, the brand will be able to target a wider customer spectrum. Currently, the most affordable EV in India is the Tata Tigor EV which gets a price tag of Rs 12.24 lakhs.
