Sixers claim bragging rights in Sydney derby over Thunder

The Sydney Sixers will remain on top of the BBL ladder after claiming bragging rights over the Sydney Thunder in Wednesday night’s derby.

The Sixers, who were set a target of 129 from 14 overs due to a rain delay during the innings break, had little trouble chasing down the total, reaching their target with eight deliveries to spare.

Today’s win puts the Sixers six points clear on top of the ladder.

Josh Philippe starred for the Sixers with the bat, blasting 64 from 36 deliveries, while spinner Steve O’Keefe produced career-best bowling figures of 3/15 from four overs.

O’Keefe’s big night out saw him earn Player of the Match honours.

“I think the feeling we have going for us is we’re taking wickets through the middle,” O’Keefe said after the match.

“We win by design. We don’t have any set format with the bat or ball. We go out there and back our abilities.”

Despite posting a first innings total of 166, the Thunder will no doubt be disappointed a higher score wasn’t put on after opener Alex Hales notched 54 from 34 deliveries.

With Usman Khawaja, Callum Ferguson and Alex Ross all departing for less than five runs each, it was up to Daniel Sams for the Thunder who notched a half-century to give his side a respectable score to defend.

Hales goes bang!
