PS5 India Pre-Order Cancellations Due to ‘Overwhelming Response on Limited Stocks’: Reliance Digital
Earlier in the week PlayStation 5 pre-orders in India went live and while most stores sold out in minutes, Reliance Digital ended up cancelling a substantial number of PS5 orders hours after confirming customers would get them. While these cancellations took place through January 12 and January 13, it also sent an email explaining why PS5 orders were cancelled. These emails were shared with IGN India and we have independently verified the contents to be accurate.
Reliance Digital claims that “due to an overwhelming response on limited stocks we are unable to fullfill (sic) our delivery commitments”. The email goes on to state that due to the inconvenience caused, those whose PS5 pre-orders were cancelled would get four coupons worth Rs. 500 each.
Interestingly, the terms and conditions state that you can’t club coupons on a single order (probably to ensure that the company makes some profit and has you come back four times to use all of them) and that they’re valid only on purchases via Reliance Digital’s website until July 15, 2021. You can check out the entire email below.
While there’s no concrete number in terms of actual cancelations, it appears that close to half of the PS5 pre-orders placed met that fate if estimates are to be believed.
It’s official: looks like Reliance Digital cancelled a majority of their orders. Not only is the below survey based on a good sample size, quite a few people who answered in the morning had their orders cancelled later. pic.twitter.com/Urq1AIKfhh

This happened with Xbox Series X pre-orders at Reliance Digital at well. At the time it was suggested that the retailer took pre-orders in excess of the stock that was allotted to it. With the PS5, history seems to have repeated itself. That too, after it was discovered that the company’s PS5 pre-registration survey leaked personal data of prospective customers.
PS5 India pre-order second wave date
That said, Sony confirmed to us that a second pre-order phase is on the way, placing the onus on retailers to let us know when it would take place.
“PS5 has met with unprecedented enthusiasm by PlayStation fans in India, resulting in a stockout during the pre-order period,” said a spokesperson for Sony to IGN India via email on January 12. “Keeping the current situation in mind, we kindly urge all customers to keep their health and safety first and refrain from visiting any retail store to pre-order a PS5. Please stay in touch with retailers for the next pre-order phase.”
While no date has been given as to when PS5 India pre-orders would open again, you can try your luck using a Telegram bot that notifies you when the console is available for pre-order on sites like Amazon.
