Patrick Cripps urged to ‘look around’ before signing long-term Carlton contract extension

Port Adelaide nice Kane Cornes believes Carlton co-captain Patrick Cripps is entitled to maintain off on re-signing with the membership if the poor on-field outcomes proceed this season.

Cornes, who beforehand urged Carlton to keep away from overpaying for Cripps, turned the warmth on the 26-year-old’s membership this time.

“I think he’s got every right to (look around),” Cornes advised Nine’s Footy Classified.

“(He’s got a a right), for a player that has won 27 per cent of his games and what he’s given to the club, to look around and work out where the direction is.

“It’s going to be his final contract and he is going to commit long-term, you’d need to know that they’re heading in the right direction and proper now you would not be assured.”

Cornes’ comments come amid conjecture over why Cripps is yet to re-commit to the club, despite CEO Cain Liddle’s confidence that an extension was around the corner earlier in April.

“We’re working by means of that course of with him and we could not be extra comfy with the place that is at,” Liddle told 3AW on April 4.

“He’s as invested a participant as I’ve ever seen at a soccer membership.”

The Age’s Sam McClure added that there was no indication from Cripps’ camp that a contract announcement was imminent.

“Three weeks have handed (since Liddle’s feedback) and he nonetheless hasn’t signed and there does not appear to be any extra strong proof that he’s going to re-sign tomorrow,” McClure told Footy Classified.

“I spoke to his administration at present they usually supplied a really abrupt ‘no remark’, which was intriguing of itself.

“The next four weeks are huge for the Carlton Football Club, not just for Paddy Cripps and where they see him, but for where Cripps sees the club going.”
