Highlights from the 2023 United Airlines NYC Half Marathon
NEW YORK (WABC) — Participants in the 2023 United Airlines NYC Half Marathon are beginning to cross the finish line.
Jacob Kiplimo, 22, won the half marathon, cruising through the finish line at 1:01:31. He became the youngest Olympian ever to compete for Uganda, when he raced at 15-years-old in Rio.
Hellen Obiri crossed the finish line far ahead of her competitors at 1:07:21, a new event record.
Jetze Plat and Susannah Scaroni won the wheelchair races for men and women, respectively.
Plat, a Dutch para-cyclist, finished in 48 minutes and 28 seconds.
Scaroni, who recently won the women’s wheelchair race at the TCS NYC Marathon, finished this half marathon in just under 56 minutes.
About 25,000 participants set off on the 13.1-mile race that started in Brooklyn at Prospect Park. The route made its way up to Central Park in Manhattan.
This year’s race featured athletes from 15 countries, 17 Olympians, 12 Paralympians, and seven past champions!
The NYC Half marathon is one of only two events that causes Times Square to be shut down during the year. The event also saw more than 1,000 kids running about a mile through Times Square for the Times Square Kids Run at the United Airlines NYC Half, which organizers and participants say they hope inspires them to take up the sport.
