Novel microorganism has potential to treat high-ammonium wastewater

Water air pollution has develop into more and more severe, and the principle pollutant in most water our bodies is nitrogen. Microbial nitrification/denitrification is among the best nitrogen removing pathways for wastewater.

Generally, the normal processes of microbial nitrogen removing embody two components: cardio nitrification and anaerobic denitrification. Nitrification and denitrification might be carried out concurrently in a single reactor by a category of microorganisms—heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification (HN-AD) micro organism.

A analysis group led by Prof. Wu Jinshui from the Institute of Subtropical Agriculture (ISA) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences remoted a novel heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification bacterium—Alcaligenes faecalis WT14, which has the potential to treat high-ammonium wastewater.

The research was printed in Journal of Environmental Management on Jan. 16.

The researchers discovered WT14 may tolerate excessive focus ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) up to 2000 mg·L-1 and had an environment friendly NH4+-N removing charge of 55.9 mg·L-1·h-1.

Unlike different Alcaligenes faecalis species, WT14 may effectively take away excessive focus nitrate (NO3—N) or nitrite (NO2—N) when they’re the only nitrogen sources.

These outcomes implied that WT14 is a novel Alcaligenes faecalis pressure and has the potential for treating wastewater containing high-strength NH4+-N, NO3—N, or NO2—N.
