Highlights from what’s new on Amazon Prime Video and Freevee in September

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (September 1)

The wait is over for Amazon’s highly-anticipated Lord of the Rings prequel series. While the plot details are still pretty murky, The Rings of Power, new on Amazon Prime Video in September, is set in the fabled Second Age in Middle-earth’s history. That means it takes place thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s better-known The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, though this series is not directly connected to Peter Jackson’s existing adaptations of those books.

Dog (September 16)

Channing Tatum stars in this story of a man and his dog, new on Amazon Prime Video in September. The road-trip buddy comedy sees two Army Rangers, a man and his dog, travelling down the Pacific Coast in the hopes of making it to a fellow soldier’s funeral.

Goodnight Mommy (September 16)

A remake of the 2014 Austrian psychological horror film of the same name, Goodnight Mommy sees two brothers visiting their mother at her country home and finding her mysteriously covered in bandages resulting from a recent bit cosmetic surgery. As they notice her behavior becoming increasingly uncharacteristic, the boys begin to wonder if perhaps this woman isn’t their mother at all.

Ambulance (September 30)

Transformers director Michael Bay is a pretty polarizing Hollywood figure, and for good reason. But every now and then, he really knocks it out of the park. With Ambulance, a low-budget thriller about a bank heist that goes wrong, with two thieves on the run in a stolen ambulance with two hostages, he absolutely wows. Between a tight storyline, some terrific acting, mile-a-minute action, and some of the best and most creative drone photography used in film, it’s not to be missed.

My Best Friend’s Exorcism (September 30)

Based on the novel by Grady Hendrix, My Best Friend’s Exorcism is an 80s-set teen horror comedy. Abby and Gretchen are lifelong besties, but after a night of teen rebellion, Gretchen starts acting weird, and soon Abby is worried about her firend’s wellbeing, and the state of her mortal soul. Could Gretchen be possessed? Will Abby have to perform an exorcism?
