MILTON, WV (WOWK) – Community members rallied around one of their own with a basketball tournament.
Families gathered at the Milton Pre-K gym for a weekend of basketball games to raise money for the Larson family.
On Monday, an 8-year-old and second grader at Culloden Elementary School named Dylan Larson was killed in a car crash in Ross County.
Larson’s father Donovan and grandmother Deanna Early were also killed in the crash.
Symaron Neal said he coached Dylan for basketball, football and baseball. In fact, Neal said he saw Dylan just last Friday, three days before he died in the crash.
Neal said the least he and the community can do is rally around the Larsons to help them get through the next few weeks.
“Dylan was an athlete. He loved sports more than anything. He played sports all year long, every sport you could think of. We were very close, very close,” Neal said. “Nobody expects this to happen. When it comes down to it, we’re here as a community to rally together and do what we can in the economics of the situation.”
Event organizers said they have raised about $2,500 from the basketball tournament, and their goal is to raise as much as $7,000 total. All the funds raised are going to the Larson family.
A GoFundMe page is also raising money for the family and has raised nearly $20,000 to this point.
