OROVILLE — The man who escaped from Butte County Jail on Aug. 31 is back in custody.

Butte County Sheriff’s Office Community Relations Coordinator Megan McCann said that sheriff’s detectives were following up on leads in South Oroville when one of them saw Miles Bondley in the south Oroville area.

She said that after a brief chase, Bondley was taken into custody at about 6:11 p.m.

Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea said last week that Bondley was placed in an exercise yard when he broke out through the roof. Honea said the walls in the yard are 12 feet high and Bondley managed to use materials to get to the top after placing wet tissue over the security cameras.

At the top of the yard is chain mesh and a metal roof with small gaps to allow for airflow and light to come in. This is where Bondley climbed out and made his way off the roof of the building, the sheriff said.

Honea said he believes Bondley had been planning the escape as he was able to conduct it quickly.
