Jared Padalecki reveals that this week’s episode of The CW’s Walker will be the biggest yet, as it was originally intended to be the season 1 finale.
WARNING: This article contains spoilers for Walker season 1, episode 12, “A Tale of Two Families.”
Jared Padalecki has revealed that episode 13 of The CW’s Walker reboot will be the biggest yet for season 1. Based on the Chuck Norris-led series that ran from 1993-2001, the reboot centers on Padalecki’s titular Texas Ranger who heads into a long undercover assignment following the death of his wife. Upon returning home, Walker struggles to reconnect with his estranged children while also navigating clashes with his family and find common ground with his over-eager new partner while investigating the circumstances behind his wife’s death.

The original series ran for eight successful seasons on CBS and spawned a TV movie four years after its conclusion that was intended to continue Norris’ run in the role through multiple films, though plans were scrapped due to low ratings. Shortly before his time came to an end on the network’s long-running hit drama Supernatural, it was announced that The CW had begun development on a reboot of Walker with Padalecki set to executive produce and star. The series was fast-tracked to make it into the 2020-21 season. Though reviews have not been glowing for the show, the ratings proved strong enough to earn an additional five episodes for its first season and a season 2 renewal, though the former appears to have put a hitch in some of its narrative planning.
In an interview with TVLine prior to the episode’s premiere, Padalecki discussed how the 13th episode of Walker will be the series’ biggest yet. Talking about its original plan as a season finale, the star opened up about how things changed and remained the same after the first season was extended. See what Padalecki had to say below:
“We had a 13-episode pickup, and so when we got the additional five-episode order along with [the] Season 2 [renewal], we kind of talked about, ‘What do we do? Do we try and draw it out and make this [story] now [Episode] 18?’ But it just made sense to go ahead and keep the episode as is. It’s a giant, giant episode. It’s our biggest to date, and I couldn’t be more proud. We built up this huge, huge climax, and [Episodes] 11, 12 [and] 13 all kind of play together.”
Given the prior episode concluded with Padalecki’s Walker being confronted at his home by convicted felon Clint and his crew and Walker’s brother Liam being shot, it certainly has established some large-scale stakes for the character going into this week’s episode. Even with the legendary status he’s found in his career, Walker is still just one man against many, and chances are likely he will have to rely on the help of his new partner in order to keep everyone alive.
It’s also interesting to note that Padalecki believes the situation will force his character to reflect on whether his actions are the real cause of the danger he and his family have encountered thus far. With episode 6’s revelation of a key tie to Emily’s murder, things are only heating up for Walker. Thanks to a second season order, though, viewers won’t have to wait for long to see how it all shakes out.
