Impossible Character’s Fate and Potential Future

Rebecca Ferguson is opening up about Ilsa Faust’s fate in 2023’s Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One.

Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, per Collider, Ferguson addressed the untimely death that Ilsa Faust met in Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One and if she’d be willing to return to the franchise in some capacity in the future.

“Well, I mean, sometimes those three-picture deals you have in Hollywood, they end, and actors have the possibility of saying no,” Ferguson said. “And we were at that point. Mission is such a huge dedication, and I’ve done it now, and it’s fantastic. And it’s amazing, and McQ and Tom wrote this incredible character.

“There’s just that much you can do with a character, I find, and I’m entitled to my own opinion on this too. I want her to go rogue. I’m interested in the dark side, I don’t want to be a team member, I’m not interested in that. And I felt like that was where we were headed. It takes a long time to make Mission too. It is blood, sweat and tears doing those. Since I finished, I’ve done a TV show and two movies, and they’re still doing [the same] Mission. But, you never know.”

Mission: Impossible 8 is in the works

The eighth Mission: Impossible film is currently expected to arrive in 2025. While Ferguson doesn’t seem to be coming back for the film, Tom Cruise, Ving Rhames, Henry Czerny, Simon Pegg, Hayley Atwell, Vanessa Kirby, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff, Shea Whigham, Greg Tarzan Davis, Mariela Garriga, Rolf Saxon, Mark Gatiss, and Charles Parnell are all reprising their roles from previous Misson: Impossible entries.

Additionally, Holt McCallany, Nick Offerman, Janet McTeer, Hannah Waddingham, and Lucy Tulugarjuk have all joined the cast.

The film was originally going to be called Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part Two; however, the Dead Reckoning Part Two subtitle was removed in October 2023. A new title for the film has not yet been announced.

Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, Mission: Impossible 8 releases in the United States on May 23, 2025.
