Genshin Impact is an incredibly popular open-world RPG from miHoYo. The game has online multiplayer elements, but can it be played offline as well?
miHoYo’s Genshin Impact is an incredibly popular open world RPG with a growing roster of playable characters and a lively fantasy setting. Although most of the game can be played completely solo, there are online multiplayer elements that allow players to explore Domains and take on enemies together. This has led some users to question whether or not Genshin Impact can be played offline.
Currently, Genshin Impact is available on PC, mobile, PS4, and PS5. Thankfully, the game’s multiplayer supports crossplay, which means people can play with their friends – no matter which version everyone is using. The game updates frequently, with live events and recurring loot and dungeon resets that are typically found in MMOs. So, having a secure internet connection in Genshin Impact is very important.

Genshin Impact also receives major content updates every six weeks. This means new story elements and characters are constantly being added to the game, and the current Version 1.2 of Genshin Impact has a ton of new events and a new region called Dragonspine that wasn’t previously accessible. The game is heavily reliant on an internet connection, which is why there’s no offline mode currently available for the game – and it seems unlikely (but not impossible) that an offline version of Genshin Impact will ever happen.
Will Genshin Impact Get An Offline Mode?
Currently, the only way to play Genshin Impact is by logging in to miHoYo’s servers. Even when playing through the main story solo, players must be connected to the internet at all times. Even with the constant updates and multiplayer features, the real reason Genshin Impact has to be played online (and why an offline version is unlikely) is because at its heart, it’s a gacha game.
Genshin Impact is free-to-play, but it makes incredible sums of money because of its Wishes, gacha pulls that are necessary for acquiring the best characters and weapons in the game. Doing this costs Fates or Primogems, which can be purchased with real money. Although events and even raffles are held for free Primogems, Genshin Impact and miHoYo make most of their money this way. Creating an offline version of the game would take away that revenue stream, which is why playing Genshin Impact offline will most likely never happen.
For players with unstable internet connections, or who play on mobile and don’t have much data, an offline version of Genshin Impact seems ideal. However, based on the way its servers are set up – as well as its nature as a free-to-play gacha game – it’s highly unlike Genshin Impact will ever be available offline.
